![]() ![]() They're able to take the lines and make them their own. Of course, it's not all in the written word. When it comes to characters trading quips, pregnant phrases, and double entendres, there hasn't been a better movie all year. Those unfamiliar with Wilde will marvel at the screenplay's ability to keep the dialogue at such a high level for 90 minutes. Those who are comfortable with Wilde's peerless composition of the English language will be thrilled by the way Parker has chosen to use the original text. Writer/director Oliver Parker (who last reached the screen with his 1996 adaptation of Othello) has taken Oscar Wilde's play and tweaked it in such a way that the playwright's best lines remain intact while the setting has been opened up to offer a fresh perspective. ![]() It's an exquisitely crafted movie that can be appreciated from start to finish. Before he achieved global fame as an author of children’s literature on a par with Aesop and the Brothers Grimm, Andersen suffered three decades of toil, isolation and strife. This quote, taken from Hans Christian Andersen’s autobiography The Fairy Tale of My Life (1855), could serve as a one-sentence biography of the great writer. First and foremost, Hegel (unlike his contemporary Immanuel Kant) emphasized the historically located character of our thinking. ![]() ![]() Yet there are good reasons why it has taken place. The recent florescence of interest in Hegel among English-language philosophers is a development no one predicted forty years ago. Yet a characterization of the major concerns that connect Hegel ’s writings can be essayed readily enough. The complexity of the arguments of his major works -the Phenomenology of Spirit (1807), the Science of Logic (1812 –1816), the Philosophy of Right (1821), and the lectures on aesthetics and world history, which are, perhaps, the least inaccessible -defies capsule summarization. ![]() ![]() ![]() I’m not sure if it’s her hesitant nature or… For some reason, Anouk strikes me as a fox.I assumed he was like, “don’t call me that because we’re not really related.” Maybe it’s the perceived age difference between them-I pictured Beau 40+-but I did NOT see his “Don’t call me a brother” conversation going toward romantic love. ![]() So there is something tethered to the Mada specifically. Ah, I was wondering why Anouk never left the townhouse, like not even a toe. When it’s mentioned here it’s not like “Oh yeah she always has dust on herself” and so it made me think he left it there. It’s 3rd person, so a line would have driven this home. Okay, so in this part, Beau points out a streak of dust on herself and I was like “did he leave that there?” but it’s passed off as like, “she always has dust on herself” but I feel like this would have been included in the description. It does make her seem more naive though, so there’s that. The way this book is written makes me think Anouk is 12 and not 17.“The witch’s oubliette” like Hermione’s bag in the 7th book.Does Anouk not know what things like mermaid’s or cows look like?. ![]() ![]() ![]() The most insightful pieces, however, focus on Delia’s personal transformation: after her “walkabout” 20s, she became a novelist and screenwriter in a happy second marriage. Many readers will be curious about Delia’s take on her more famous sister, who was “ruthless as a writer” and the model for a “wildly opinionated, wildly successful, self-centered older sister” in her novel Hanging Up. The lighter fare-including a spirited poem about bad hair days and a charming appreciation of her dog, a small white Havanese named Honey-plays second fiddle to the real drama: her relationship with sister Nora and their partnership on projects such as the film You’ve Got Mail and the off-Broadway hit Love, Loss, and What I Wore. “Life is such a jumble,” writes Ephron in one of many blunt essays from her fourth collection, a phrase that aptly describes these reflections on the monumental and the mundane. ![]() |
